Ranking System
Ranks
Smash 6 uses a traditional ranked ladder for Online Quickplay. The GSP system is no longer used for online matchmaking. The ranks are:
- Pewter I-IV
- Silver I-IV
- Gold I-IV
- Crystal I-IV
- Ruby I-IV
- Sapphire I-IV
- Emerald I-IV
- Diamond I-IV
- Pearl I-II
- Champion
- Legend
The first time a player plays in a ranked playlist, they will be asked where they prefer to start on the ladder. The player may choose Silver I (recommended for new players), Gold I (recommended for veteran players), or Crystal I (recommended for experienced players).
Players who win 50 sets with a character while at Legend Rank for Ranked 1v1 will earn a Mastery Badge for that character. Similarly, winning 50 sets of Ratio Tag Team with a character on the team will earn a Tag-Team Mastery Badge for that character. Mastery Badges persist throughout all seasons and can be placed on the player nameplate.
Players who obtain all Mastery Badges will earn the Ultimate Smash Legend Mastery Badge for the corresponding playlist.
Promotions and Demotions
The ranking system in this game does not use a points and mmr based system. It simply tracks the win/loss ratio of the last 10 sets played.
- When the win/loss ratio is 70% or greater, the player is promoted
- When the win/loss ratio is 30% or lower, the player is demoted
If a player has not yet played 10 sets, promotions and demotions are decided by:
- If, after the 7th, 8th, or 9th set played, the player has won 7 sets, the player is promoted
- If, after the 7th, 8th, or 9th set played, the player has lost 7 sets, the player is demoted
Whenever the player is promoted or demoted, the history of the last 10 sets is cleared. A player cannot be demoted for the remainder of the season upon reaching Legend rank.
Matchmaking
The matchmaking system will attempt to pair players of the exact same rank. However, if a same-rank opponent cannot be found within 20 seconds, the search is expanded to include players within 2 ranks. For example, a Gold III player could match with a Gold I or Crystal I player.
At the end of a set, players can continue to play against each other by selecting Rematch. Any sets played after rematch has been selected are not tracked as part of the last 10 sets history.
Seasons
There are 3 ranked seasons per year, with each season generally lasting 120 days. At the end of a Ranking Season, players will be consolidated to specific divisions:
- Pewter and Silver players will be set to Silver I
- Gold players will be set to Gold I
- Crystal players will be set to Crystal I
- Ruby players will be set to Ruby I
- Sapphire players will be set to Sapphire I
- Emerald players will be set to Emerald I
- Diamond players will be set to Diamond I
- Pearl, Champion, and Legend players will be set to Pearl I
If a player does not play at least 7 sets in the season and is Ruby rank or higher, that player will be put one division lower (For example, Emerald I down to Sapphire IV).
Notes
This gives Smash Bros a traditional straightforward ranking system that's easy to follow and works great. No need for a points system.
There is also no need to give players separate ranks per character they play - that sort of system places too much emphasis on the character being played, not the player, and leads to inaccurate matchmaking. If a player can reach Legend Rank with one character, it is extremely likely they will be able to reach Legend Rank with any other character in the game.
The Nintendo Online Family Plan is advised for family members of different skill levels that want to play Ranked playlists.
